Abhishekamअभिषेकम्
Sacred bathing ritual of a deity's image with holy substances.
Detailed Explanation
Abhishekam is the ritualistic bathing of a deity's murti (image) with sacred liquids such as water, milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, coconut water, sugarcane juice, sandalwood paste, rose water, and Panchamrit. It is one of the most important forms of worship, especially for Shiva (Rudrabhishekam with milk and water), Vishnu (Thirumanjanam), and other deities. The ritual purifies the deity's image, energizes the consecration, and the liquids used become Prasad with healing properties. Maha Shivaratri features elaborate Abhishekam ceremonies throughout the night. Different substances symbolize different blessings: milk for purity, honey for sweet speech, ghee for victory, and water for purification.
