Samsaraसंसार

The cycle of birth, death, and rebirth driven by Karma.

Detailed Explanation

Samsara is the continuous cycle of birth (Janma), life, death (Mrityu), and rebirth that all beings undergo according to Hindu belief. The soul (Atman) transmigrates from one body to another based on accumulated Karma. The nature of rebirth — human, animal, or celestial — depends on the quality of past actions. Samsara is often depicted as an ocean (Bhava Sagara) that the soul must cross to reach liberation (Moksha). The cycle is propelled by Avidya (ignorance of one's true nature), desire (Kama), and attachment (Moha). Hindu philosophy teaches that Samsara, while appearing real, is ultimately Maya (illusion) — the Atman is eternal and unchanging. Breaking free from Samsara requires spiritual knowledge, devotion, or disciplined practice.
