Time Periods
Choghadiya
A panchang system dividing day and night into eight periods each, classified as auspicious or inauspicious for choosing activity times.
Detailed Explanation
Choghadiya (or Chaughadiya) divides the time from sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts of roughly 1.5 hours each, and likewise the night from sunset to sunrise, with each segment assigned one of seven labels: Amrit, Shubh, and Labh are auspicious, Char is good for travel, while Rog, Kaal, and Udveg are avoided for new undertakings. The sequence of labels depends on the weekday, and the actual durations shift with local sunrise and sunset times. Choghadiya is especially popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan as a quick, practical muhurat tool for everyday decisions — when to set out on a journey, open a shop, or begin a transaction — without consulting a full muhurat calculation.
