Calendar & Panchang
Varaवार
The weekday — one of the five elements of the Panchang, each day ruled by one of the nine grahas.
Detailed Explanation
Vara is the solar weekday, counted from sunrise to sunrise rather than midnight to midnight, and is the fifth limb of the Panchang alongside tithi, nakshatra, yoga, and karana. Each vara is ruled by a graha: Ravivar (Sunday) by the Sun, Somvar (Monday) by the Moon, Mangalvar (Tuesday) by Mars, Budhvar (Wednesday) by Mercury, Guruvar (Thursday) by Jupiter, Shukravar (Friday) by Venus, and Shanivar (Saturday) by Saturn. The ruling planet shapes each day's devotional character — Mondays for Shiva, Tuesdays for Hanuman and Durga, Thursdays for Vishnu and the Guru, Saturdays for Shani — driving the weekly vrats and temple visits many Hindus observe. The vara also feeds into muhurat selection, as certain activities favor certain weekdays.
